Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (Shin Splints)

Medial tibial stress syndrome, commonly known as shin splints, causes pain along the inner edge of the shinbone and is frequently seen in runners and athletes who increase training intensity rapidly.

Causes

  • Overuse from running or sports
  • Poor foot mechanics or improper footwear
  • Rapid increase in training volume or intensity

Treatment

Rest, ice, anti-inflammatory measures, gait analysis, training modification, and orthotics are mainstays of treatment. Progressive strengthening and flexibility exercises reduce recurrence.
