Achilles Tendinitis

The Achilles tendon is the largest and strongest tendon in the human body. It connects the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) to the heel bone (calcaneus) and plays a crucial role in walking, running, jumping, and almost every activity that involves movement of the foot.

When this tendon becomes irritated or inflamed, the condition is known as Achilles Tendinitis. It is a common overuse injury that often affects athletes, runners, and individuals who engage in activities that put repetitive stress on the tendon. However, it can also occur in people with poor foot mechanics or limited flexibility.

Symptoms

  • Pain and stiffness along the back of the heel, especially in the morning or after activity
  • Swelling and tenderness around the tendon
  • Pain that worsens with exercise or climbing stairs
  • Reduced strength and flexibility in the ankle
  • A “creaking” or crackling sound when moving the ankle

Diagnosis

At Delhi Foot, our specialists use a combination of clinical evaluation, physical examination, and advanced imaging tests (such as ultrasound or MRI) to accurately diagnose Achilles Tendinitis and rule out partial tears or ruptures.

Causes of Achilles Tendinitis

  • Repetitive strain from running, jumping, or sudden increase in physical activity
  • Poor range of motion or tight calf muscles
  • Sudden injury or trauma to the tendon
  • Age-related degeneration (more common in middle-aged and older adults)
