Hallux Valgus / Bunion
Hallux Valgus, commonly called a bunion, is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe.
It develops when the big toe pushes against the second toe, forcing the joint to stick outward.
This condition can lead to swelling, pain, redness, and difficulty in walking or wearing shoes.
Causes
- Genetic predisposition (runs in families).
- Ill-fitting or tight shoes, especially high heels.
- Flat feet or abnormal foot mechanics.
- Arthritis or other joint conditions.
Symptoms
- Pain and tenderness around the big toe joint.
- Swelling, redness and inflammation.
- Restricted movement of the big toe.
- Difficulty in finding comfortable footwear.
Treatment
Management depends on severity. Options include:
- Wearing wider, supportive footwear.
- Use of orthotic inserts to reduce pressure.
- Pain relief with medication and ice packs.
- Surgery in severe or advanced cases to correct deformity.
